How to Clean & Maintain Copper and Brass Utensils

Copper and brass are stunning — until they tarnish. That dull, blotchy patina is a natural reaction to air and moisture, not damage, and the good news is it's completely reversible with ingredients already in your kitchen.

The Classic Lemon-Salt Method

Cut a lemon in half, sprinkle coarse salt directly onto the cut surface, and rub it over the tarnished area in circular motions. The citric acid combined with the mild abrasiveness of salt lifts tarnish without scratching the metal. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and dry immediately with a soft cloth — leftover moisture is what causes tarnish to return faster.

For Tougher Tarnish: Tamarind or Vinegar Paste

If lemon and salt aren't cutting it, make a paste with tamarind pulp (or white vinegar) and a little salt or flour to thicken it. Apply, let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then scrub gently with a soft cloth and rinse well. This is the traditional method used for generations on kansa and brass thalis before they're brought back into daily rotation.

Everyday Maintenance Tips

Always dry copper and brass items completely after washing — air-drying leaves water spots and speeds up tarnishing. Avoid dishwashers and harsh chemical cleaners, which strip the metal's natural patina unevenly and can damage hammered or engraved detailing. Store pieces in a dry area away from humidity; a small silica packet nearby can help in humid climates. For pieces you use daily, like a copper water bottle, a quick lemon-salt rub once a week keeps it looking fresh.

A Word on Patina

Not all tarnish needs removing right away — many collectors and Ayurvedic practitioners actually let a light patina develop on decorative or serving pieces intentionally, since it's considered part of the metal's natural character. Use your judgment: for daily drinkware, keep it bright and clean; for statement serving pieces, a little aged character can look beautiful too.
